SAW SELECTION Back to Basics
Back to Basic Saw Selection is a quick look at various saw options and what would work best for your specific application. Saw selection can be somewhat confusing if you don't have an understanding of basics such as aggressive teeth vs. saws used for crafting or situations where a less aggressive blade would excel. Why a saw would be better suited for a woodshop than the woods. Why you would use one for firewood and one for camp tasks. There are various saw options available, but with the right saw, every task can be accomplished with ease.

Guys, be aware that pruning saws are designed to be used on the "pull-stroke" or "pull-cut", that's because, when reaching up above your head it's easier to cut using a pull stroke than a push stroke. The teeth are angled differently for the pull stroke. Often I see folk using a pruning saw to cut already felled limbs or when acquiring "Fat-Wood" but you'll cut quicker and with less effort using a normal carpenters cross-cut hand saw; some of the heat hardened throw away saws made by Sandvik are good. So, as they say, use the correct tool for the job / saw.

Great class ! Thanks! Nothing was cut but the information was priceless. Never thought of teeth per sq inch ! Just camp saws and bucking 27 to 38 inch steel saws for camping and put a split garden hose over the blade and carried a couple of spare blades inside of the hose in case I snapped one in a log. I am 65 years old and haven't broken a blade that I can remember since 1992. I've always just bought what Ace hardware had on the shelf. I have two axes a great little hatchet I found on a scouting adventure back as a tender foot 1975 . No markings but about 1 1/2 lb head and keeps a good edge . I finally bought my GRAIL knife a Bark River Kephart CPM3V 5inch with black scales and red liners Haven't regretted that purchase-- never will ! I'll bequeath it to my grand nephew I believe. All my camping supplies have of late been from your store . Great geer great value and long lived. My favorite item so far in the canteen cook kit with the larger steel alcohol/spirits stove . Wash it with Bonaire (bartenders friend ) And after it was introduced I had bought it and it still looks brand new ! Only a couple of minor debts and a slight discoloration of the bottom . Well just wanted you to know I Appreciate a classy no frills class with rock solid information over the regular bushcraft channels destruction tests .👌👍🙋‍♂️

just got it in the mail and immediately tested with magnetic to see if it was stainless steel. The magnet tried to stay on, but on some parts, fell off. It stays on the cup a bit, but not on the canteen, lid, or stove. Not the supplier's fault, I guess, but I feel very naive for not having looked for reviews before buying. I looked only at Amazon's reviews and those are sooooo full of lies.

I give the Bahco a little more credit with one feature many saws do not have. The Bahco cuts sawing in both directions. You'd be surprised how many seemingly much better saws only cut in one direction. Something to consider if saving energy or working fast comes into play. Probably just forgot after all there are a lot of considerations to remember.

There was one folding saw you did not mention. When it comes to bucking large quantities of firewood it rules over them all. The agawa boreal 24. I have that combined with a silky big boy. Unbeatable combination for firewood.

I never considered a saw until I acquired a handful of Sandvik Laplanders (before they sold it to Bahco). Used them for decades until I got to needing a new one and discovered Silky from RUclips. Bought a Gomboy, eventually moved to Bigboy. Cuts like a chainsaw. I carry a smaller saw blade on a pocket knife for crafting.

Silky are very brittle. Ive never seen a used Silky that wasn't broken. I believe corona is a better saw. I still follow a old boyscout trick of carrying saw blades then making a buck saw. You learn skills and have a great saw blades take up almost no space.

Something you didn’t mention. I like the Silky as well as the Bahco. But because of the different temper between the two, if you put the Silky in a bind it will snap. If you put the Bahco in a bind it will bend. You could straighten the Bahco back out but not the Silky. Something to consider in a survival situation perhaps.

Curved blade has a more aggressive bite on the draw,ie,get more cutting power for the effort. Straight blade better for finer cuts, accuracy ,getting in to forks and tends to bind and get stuck less. Curved blade with less teeth per inch for firewood etc and straight blade with more teeth per inch for more control detail work. Did a few years as arborist and used both depending on whether it was pruning or removals. Yeah and silky kick ass. Futures so bright😎
